Libertarian Joins Birmingham City Council

Dr. Jimmy Blake, chair of the Libertarian Party of Alabama, ran a successful campaign for Birmingham, Alabama, City Council District 3. Although the race was nonpartisan, Blake's Libertarian affiliation was brought up both by himself and by his opponent.

The larger of Birmingham's two newspapers, the News (circulation 170,000), endorsed Blake, while the smaller, the Post-Herald, endorsed his opponent. The News praised Blake for his energy and cautioned him to focus on local issues, a reference to Libertarian national platform issues brought up by Blake's opponent.

The final (run-off) election votes were Jimmy Blake, 2,906 (55.5%), and Virginia Volker, 2,332.

Postscript: In 1996, Blake decided to run for U.S. Senate as a Republican.
