Ohio Man Shotguns Attacker

Rudely awakened when his girlfriend's former beau broke in and began to beat them both with a broomstick, Uhrichsville, Ohio, resident Dan Mazalic managed to get to a closet where he kept a loaded shotgun. When the intruder continued to beat Mazalic and his girlfriend, Mazalic fired a single blast, fatally wounding the assailant. The shooting ended a day in which the dead man had threatened the couple and apparently kicked in the door of Mazalic's home.

Studies indicate that firearms are used over 2 million times a year for personal protection, and that presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances. Shooting usually can be justified only where crime constitutes an immediate, imminent threat to life or limb, or, in some cases, property. Anyone is free to quote or reproduce these accounts.
