Burke's 5,000 vote showing for Congress was many times the margin
of victory of ten votes. The Democractic loser called for a recount.
The state party needed 2% in a statewide race to retain "minor party"
status, which it did. Minor party status allows voters to register in
the party, but petitioning is still required to get on the ballot.
